Brighten Your Child's Room with a Do It Yourself Mural
First things first, you will need to decide on the subject of your mural. This can be your child's favorite cartoon or storybook character, a hobby, or even a vacation destination. Look through coloring books, greeting cards, clip art, postcards, and more. Just about anything goes for ideas, but select a picture that you consider "do-able".
Once you have selected a picture, you will need to get the image on the wall. The easiest way to do this is by using a projector. You can borrow or rent a projector, or even buy one. Check with your local hobby store - there are simple art projectors that cost approximately fifty dollars that are perfect for this type of project.
Depending on the type of projector you are using and the picture you selected for your mural, you may need to make modifications to the picture. You can use tracing paper or even a scanner to make any necessary changes. You may also need a scanner or copier to create a black and white transparency copy. Once you are happy with the picture and the projected image on the wall, it's time to move on.
First, verify that the projector is squarely facing the wall. Otherwise, the projected image may appear distorted. Trace the projected image on the wall using a pencil.
Next, it's time to paint! Acrylic craft paints generally work well - they are inexpensive and available in hobby stores as well as many discount retailers. While picking out paint, pick up a variety of brushes. Wide, flat paintbrushes work well for large areas, while round brushes are good to use for more detailed areas of the mural. You can even use paint pens for outlining.
When you paint, take your time. Paint the large areas of the mural first, followed by the smaller areas. Outline when you are finished, or if you like the way the mural looks without outlining, simply erase any pencil marks (after the paint has completely dried).
And now, for the best part - seeing your child's eyes light up when you unveil their one-of-a-kind mural. Just be careful…you might find yourself taking special requests from any kids who visit!
