Home Security Basics

Even if you haven't had the misfortune of your house getting broken into before and even if you think you live in the quietest, most peaceful of neighborhoods, there's really no good reason as to why you shouldn't protect your home. When thinking of installing some form of home security, most people don't know where to start. It's quite confusing, since there's such a huge amount of home security alternatives around and you'll find yourself asking questions about what kind of security camera you need, whether or not a motion detector would work for you and so forth. In order to help you out, here are some home security basics that will give you a starting point for the protection of your household.

1. Think like a burglar

In order to defeat a burglar's tactics, you need to anticipate his moves. Try thinking like a burglar and you'll soon find out the vulnerable points in your home, thus the ones that you will have to protect using home security measures. Look at your house and compare it to the other ones of your neighbors; does it stand out as an easy target? If all your neighbors are using home security systems and your house is the only one that doesn't have one, then it's prone to become a target for burglars.

2. Use light, time and sound to your advantage

Burglars fear three elements: time, sound and light (not necessarily in any order). Home security systems will use these elements to their advantage. For example, a security camera combined with a couple of night spotlights can easily scare off any burglar, since the risk of getting caught is too high. A burglar alarm that doesn't simply wake you up like an alarm clock will have a burglar running away in no time. Last but not least, even if you don't have any light or audio-based home security systems, a solid door with an enforced lock will have a similar effect. If the burglar will have to spend too much time picking the lock or breaking the door, there's a big chance that he will renounce his shady activities, because more time spent on getting inside your home means more time that he spends out in the open, risking to get caught.

3. Make sure the burglars know your house is protected

Don't mistake your home security system for something that you'll use to catch burglars. You don't really want to catch them, you want to scare them off and protect your property. Once a burglar is inside, he can become quite dangerous and "catching" him isn't really your best option at that point. You don't have to act like a policeman, all you want to do is to protect your property, remember. This is where some people make a huge mistake, in that they hide their home security system so they can "catch" the burglar. Hidden cameras, mute alarms that trigger a police alarm instead are indeed great for catching burglars, but not so good at protecting your property or your personal safety. Think about what could happen in the time span in which a mute alarm is triggered and the police arrives.

Instead, if the security camera is thoroughly visible, or if the alarm will go off wild as soon as it is triggered, you won't even have to risk anything at all, since the burglar will turn tail and run away. Thus, choosing and positioning your security gear right is one of the home security basics that every house owner needs to know by hard.

Now that you know the basics, all you have left is to figure out what kind of home security systems you need, the budget you have for it and whether or not it's compatible with your home setup.
