Acne Myths
Myth #1: Acne will go away on its own.
Acne generally will not go away on its own and will need treatment to be cleared up and treated. There are very many products available for acne treatment and there is no reason not to research and find out which one would work best for you. In some acne cases, you might want to consult with a dermatologist to see what other kinds of treatment can be used to treat your acne.
Myth #2: Acne is caused by your diet.
How many times have you heard someone say not to eat chocolate because it will give you pimples? Many people think that you can get zits from eating greasy foods. Even though many people believe this, it is a myth! Extensive scientific research has been conducted, searching for possible relations between a person's diet and a possible cause of acne, and they have not found anything conclusive. However, every person is different. Some people notice that breakouts are worse after eating certain foods, and the kinds of food are different with each and every person. You may notice breakouts after eating chocolate, and someone else might not have any effect after eating chocolate. If you notice that some sort of food or drink can be making your acne worse, then don't have that specific food or drink as much!
Myth #3: Popping zits will make them go away.
Even though this seems to be true, it is yet another myth! Rather than speeding up the process of healing, popping zits actually prolongs the situation as popping the zit causes the bacteria inside to be pushed deeper into the skin, which allows more infection to grow, and ultimately and eventually leads to acne scarring.
Myth #4: Tanning clears up skin.
This definitely is a myth and even has the reverse effect! After tanning, it may seem has improved your complexion, but in fact the tan may only have masked or covered up the acne and has the reverse effect that you are looking for. Actually, the sun can make your skin dry and irritated, which can can lead to even more breakouts. If you are going to be going tanning, make sure to use a sunscreen that does not contain any oils and other chemicals that might clog up your pores to cause your acne to get worse. You should look for "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" on the label.
Myth #5: Only teenagers can get acne.
While most acne sufferers are actually teenagers, adults can also develop acne, which makes this yet another myth. The actual truth is that about 25% to 30% of all people between the ages 25- 44 have active acne.
After going through and uncovering these myths, it is important for you to know that these are not all of the myths that are out there. There will always be more acne myths going around on the internet and in different health magazines.
