7 Common Acne Myths
The following are seven of the most common acne myths you will hear:
1. Cleaning Your Skin Will Help Get Rid Of Acne
A common belief is that if you keep you skin cleaner, it will help prevent acne breakouts. This isn't the case, however.
Acne is caused by oil under the skin's surface - not dirt on the outside. While it's still important to keep your skin clean, cleaning more than twice a day can cause you skin to become dry. It is thought that this can even lead to worse acne problems.
2. Using Makeup To Hide Pimples Can Make Them Worse
This isn't entirely a myth - you need to be sure you use the right kind of makeup. If you do, it won't make your acne any worse. There are many types of makeup that are designed specifically for people with acne problems.
3. Popping A Zit Will Get Rid Of Them
Popping a zit or squeezing pimples is one of the worst things you can do. This can cause infection and in many cases can lead to scarring.
It can also spread the bacteria that leads to acne, ultimately making your acne worse rather than better.
4. Tanning Will Help Clear Up Acne
A tan can help to make acne less visible, but it doesn't actually get rid of it. And the potential skin damage - and possibility of skin cancer - is not worth the risk.
5. Acne Can Be Triggered By Stress
Studies have shown that acne is not actually triggered by stress. If you find you have breakouts when dealing with stressful situations, it may be something else that is leading to the problem, such as rubbing your face with your hands unconciously.
6. Fatty Or Sugary Foods Lead To Acne
It has long been thought that fatty foods and sugary foods such as chocolate can cause acne breakouts. These foods don't lead to acne, but it is possible that you may have a reaction to certain foods that can cause an outbreak.
If you find a certain food causes your acne to get worse consistently, it could be an allergy or some other reaction.
7. Acne Will Go Away On Its Own
This is true to a certain degree - for many people, acne will eventually go away. That doesn't mean it should be left untreated, however. There are many effective treatments that can help minimize or get rid of acne much quicker than leaving it to its own devices.
