Networking To Win New Business

My experience of running my own businesses for over 25 years tells me that the one constant necessity is to continuously win new business. Networking is one of the easiest ways to do this, provided that you do it right.

I am often asked: "What is the secret of successful networking?" In truth I don't think there is a single secret. Rather it's a matter of getting a number of points right.

What I would say is that "Positioning" is right up there with the most important. I think the reason it doesn't get more attention is that it's a difficult subject to pigeon-hole.

You may find that it helps to think about positioning as a specialist subject or specialization. In my opinion people do not specialize sufficiently.

There's a lot of talk about niche markets nowadays. What are niche markets? They are simply segments of the market that specialize in certain areas.

The advent of the Internet means that even the smallest niche is now a highly valuable market. In order to appeal to that market surely it makes sense to be a specialist in supplying what the market needs.

There are great advantages in being a specialist. You can study a small subject intensely and thus become an expert. Your market is clearly defined. You can position yourself as THE expert for that area.

I position myself as an expert in ways to win new business. This came about because from the moment I started my first business I realized that I would always need to be able to win new business. If you don't grow and move forward you will slowly die.

Because part of me was always focussed on winning new business I became a real expert as the years went by. Now I can legitimately position myself as an expert because I have got the battle scars and won a far greater number of blue chip clients than most would expect of a small business like mine.

My advice to anyone who wants to grow their business is: audit your strengths and interests and then position yourself as a specialist.
