One way would be to take L-lysine supplements which inhibits the activities of the herpes virus. If you are already suffering from a cold sore, then the supplements keep it in check. You can take a maintenance dosage just to prevent them even when you do not have the infection. L-lysine is said to stimulate liver to produce more cholesterol, it is advisable therefore to keep that in mind. You can also apply lysine cream on your lips twice daily just to take precaution.

You can avoid imbalance in the intake of amino acids lysine and arginine. Foods containing chocolates, nuts, cereal grains etc tend to trigger the herpes virus. Replacing your tooth brush when you suspect that you have an oncoming cold sore can prevent the spread of it. The herpes virus can survive long on your tooth brush. After you are healed of your cold sore, change your tooth brush to prevent it from spreading the virus to other parts of the mouth.

Not sharing items such as utensils facial towels and so on are a sure way of preventing cold sores. Kissing is forbidden until the cold sore is completely healed. Also avoid picking, touching or squeezing the cold sore as you might infect other parts of your face. Though the above can greatly prevent this infection, a good immune system is the way to go.
