At this time of year many people will be urging you to make New Year's resolutions, however change is not a one-off process. The beginning of a New Year can be a great time to make resolutions, and to symbolically leave the past behind. There's something very desirable about a fresh start. Ask anyone who has moved to a different town, started a new career or made life-changing decisions.

But real success requires baby steps every day of the year - a change in attitude, learning something new, taking action towards your goals. It doesn't matter how small the changes are; over time they add up to success. Imagine if you could add one new habit every month. In a year with 12 new habits under your belt your life could be entirely different.

Start by identifying three life changes you have been putting off. This can be anything from quitting smoking, saving an extra $50/week, repaying your mortgage, losing weight, writing a novel or learning new skills.

Three life changes that I want to make that will improve my life:
1. _____________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________
3. _____________________________________________________

Now pick one of these and turn it into a goal. Keep in mind, goals: Are specific e.g. lose 20 kg, repay an additional $6,000 off the mortgage, write 500 words every day on my novel Have a time frame e.g. by 30 June 2007 They must also be achievable. It's okay for your goals to be difficult, but if they're beyond your reach you'll give up. Remember, baby steps are the key…

My goal is:

Now that you're fired up now is the time to take immediate action! e.g. write a budget, have a healthy lunch, decide on a title for your novel, skip dessert, advertise for a flatmate/boarder. Make it real by getting started today.

One action I can take today that will bring me closer to my goal is:

A further three actions I can take this week that will bring me closer to my goal are:
1. _____________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________
3. _____________________________________________________

So what are you waiting for? Have a Happy New Year and good luck with your goals.
