Smokers Etiquette

Are you a smoker that may need to brush up on your etiquette when around non-smokers? As a non-smoker these are things I find especially troubling when with friends and family that smoke. Here are some simple tips to improve your smoker/non-smoker relationships.

NEVER:

1. Smoke in anyone's car. Your smoke acts as a catalyst to depreciate the value of the vehicle and although it may just be an addiction your habit can be construed as a sign of disrespect.

2. Smoke inside a non-smoker's home. Even if they do not protest, it's common sense. They chose not to smoke for a reason.

3. Yes, never smoking inside also includes smoking in their bathroom or in any other room with the door closed. Contrary to what you believe, even with the window open, smoke permeates; and a non-smoker's nose is especially sensitive to the smell. They also won't appreciate having their belongings saturated with cigarette smoke.

4. Smoke in a home of a non-smoker with children, especially babies. You put the children at risk and may risk having your host really upset with you.

5. Now that we have never smoking inside down, never drop your butts on anyone's property. It is quite gross. Not only that but it's like putting your garbage on someone's lawn. Instead find a smoker's post, bring your own ashtray, or put the butt in a container afterward.

6. Finally, if you've been told that your friend or family member is a non-smoker who does not appreciate smoking, please try to control yourself when visiting, or excuse yourself if you need to smoke, outside.
