Fruitcakes, as the name suggests, have dried fruits added in them as a part of their preparation. The main ingredients used in making fruitcakes are flour, butter, rum, and dried fruits. Dry fruits that are commonly used in these cakes are raisins, almonds, walnuts, cherries, and apricots.

Fruitcakes are made by battering the above ingredients and baking them. After baking, they are allowed to cool for a considerably long period. This is done to enhance the taste of the cakes. After cooling, fruit cakes may be refrigerated and served.

The standard instructions followed for baking a cake can be applied here also. Care must be taken to preheat the oven and to grease the pan. They must be covered with a foil to avoid over baking and browning. A bowl of water may be placed on the bottom of the oven to avoid the cakes drying out.

Fruitcakes must be baked at low temperatures. Baking time differs according to the oven used and the size of the cake. After baking, they are put in bags or covers after coating them with liquor or fruit juices used in the preparation. They are usually stored in cool dark places like cellar or basements. Even when fruitcakes are in the cooling process, they are brushed with the same liquor or fruit juice which was added during the preparation. It is brushed over the cakes at varied intervals.

Fruitcakes are of German origin, and are available in various flavors and sizes. Rice fruitcakes and pumpkin fruitcakes are some of the variations of standard fruit cakes. Fruitcakes are available in several pastry stores. Fruit cakes can be ordered over the phone or through the Internet, and many stores offer free home delivery packages. They are suitable for all occasions like birthday parties, wedding parties, send-off parties, Christmas parties, and Thanksgiving parties.
