While it may be the rule of thumb to fast on the day of Yom Kippur, its tradition to have a large feast of food on the eve of Yom Kippur before the holiday starts. The feast is usually filled with lots of traditional foods like Kreplach and rice. This feast can be held at slightly different times but often its right after the Mincha prayer, which is one of three daily communal prayers. The Mincha is the afternoon prayer so the feast is something of a late lunch, or early dinner meal.

The feast may be just for the family or for a large gathering. Either way you may want to make it easier on yourself if hosting such an event by picking up lots of appropriately themed paper supplies like paper plates, napkins, cups and tablecloths to make for easy clean up. There are plenty of Yom Kippur and Jewish themed party decorations available as well. It's easy to find some bright silver or gold ceiling dangles and wall hangings.

Kreplach are small dumplings similar to ravioli or perogies filled with meat, boiled and then fried. These are very tasty treats to have for appetizers or as part of the main dishes. Another popular staple of the feast is Challah, the round bread loaves often shared at a family meal. Other popular foods are: Sweet Potato Soup, Chicken Rice and Peas, Kugel, Tzimmes, lots of fish like Salmon and Cod, and plenty of sweets like Carrot Cake, Honeycake, and Applesauce cake. Tzimmes is a kind of casserole generally filled with fruit, meat and vegetables cooked over low heat and flavored with honey.

Traditional 'sweets' for the pre-Yom Kippur feast are usually fruits like Apples, Carrots, and Honey. There may not be a lot of Chocolate on the table, though the menu can differ depending on the family. Usually the table will feature lots of foods that are high in carbohydrates and low in caffeine.
