Is Your Skin Care Routine Poisoning You?

Your body can absorb up to 2 kilos of chemicals, (that's the same weight as two bags of sugar), just through the cosmetics and toiletries that you put on your skin. That's before you include the chemicals that you are exposed to from living in an industrial nation.

There is no denying that we live in a chemical world, in fact, over the last 50 years over 80,000 new chemicals have been created, tens of thousands of which are used and released in to the environment each day. These chemicals are used in everything found in our daily life- from our cosmetics to food packaging, from toys to sofas- and our society now depends upon them.

However, this dependence comes with a potentially high price to pay as many of these chemicals that are found in our everyday products are hazardous to our health. There is much uncertainty about the long term impact that exposure to them might have on not only our own health, but on the health of our wildlife and the environment. Many of these chemicals can escape from consumer items and find their way into the air or can leach from packaging into the very food it contains, exposing us either through the skin, by inhalation or ingestion.

This is further impacted when on a daily basis many of us actually add these chemicals to our skin, hair and teeth. We do this habitually without really ever considering what is actually in the products that we are using, or more importantly, the accumulative effects that they are having on our overall health.

By simply switching your toiletries to ones that contain natural, organic products and that don't use chemicals, will benefit your skin, hair and teeth and it will also decrease your exposure to these harmful chemicals.

So take the time to clear out your make-up bag, throw away any products that you haven't used for a while and replace them with ones that are kind to your body.

But be aware and become a label reader, as to claim to be 'natural' a product only has to contain 1% of the natural product, so ensure that you are purchasing what you think you are. Protect yourself from the hidden dangers lurking in your everyday cosmetics and toiletries.
