Spring Cleaning for Your Whole Life
It's finally that dreaded time of year again - spring cleaning (and let's not forget it's tax season, too)! I always look at spring as an opportunity to start fresh and new. It's really the perfect time to do some major reorganizing and de-cluttering. The weather starts to become warmer, the sun starts to shine longer, and people are generally in good moods at this time of year, because summer's coming!
The key is not to overwhelm yourself. If you pick one Saturday afternoon to do everything from scrubbing your floors on your hands and knees with a toothbrush to cleaning out and reorganizing all your kitchen cabinets, you're probably not going to get everything done as well as you would have liked and your family might think you've been possessed by the end of the day. Pick one major project at a time, one each weekend or each day, depending on your schedule.
Remember, when we get rid of things we don't use anymore we are making room for other good things to enter our life, so please don't be afraid to make a big pile of things to donate to charity. I've gone through my closet twice so far this year (I find I can part with more the second time through), and have taken mountains of clothing to the salvation army. Not only do I feel better about having room in my closet for new clothes, but I feel good for donating all those clothes that someone might benefit from.
I set a goal for myself to pick one room or one project per weekend. It's not too much work for me, it still leaves me plenty of time to relax, and I continuously feel great because I'm always making so much progress. And, as the weeks go on, my house looks more and more clutter-free, which I absolutely love, so it gives me more motivation to find a new project to work on for next week.
You can spring-clean other areas of your life, too. Spring is always a good time to re-evaluate your goals and the progress you have made towards them. Is it time to toss a few of your goals out the window in favor of new ones? It's perfectly okay to do that. As you grow as a person, what once might have seemed important to you may not seem so anymore. If you've had a goal for quite some time, but haven't done anything to move yourself closer to achieving it, perhaps it's something you're really not all that passionate about anymore.
If you take it slowly and give yourself ample time to accomplish all of your tasks, you will find the spring cleaning process much more enjoyable, I promise. I, for one, love to watch my husband carry out large bags of items that will be donated or large boxes full of trash. It means more good things are coming my way, because I've made plenty of room to welcome them!
