Sometimes it is necessary to rent a commercial self storage unit and store your property. Whether you plan to store your belongings for a few weeks, months or a year or more you do not have to do it in a haphazard fashion that is messy and leaves you confused as to where you put everything! All it takes to store items efficiently is some know-how and a little bit of common sense. Read on for some ideas.

The first step in the process is to plan for what will be put into storage. Do this by first looking over all of the items that you need to store and figuring out which ones you will pack in boxes and then stack in the unit. You then need to set priorities for your boxes. The boxes that you will need to get into the most often should be situated closer to the front of the commercial unit and not way in the back.

Group the boxes according to weight or how fragile they are. To put it another way, your boxes that are the heaviest as well as the sturdiest should be on the bottom of the piles of boxes while the fragile and breakable items should be placed on the top with care. You will likely have some items to store that are an awkward size and will be cumbersome when it comes to stacking. What you need to do in this case it to consider how heavy or light the items are and how frequently you will want to have access to them. Once you know that then you can decide how to fit them in the storage unit.

The next step for you is to choose the unit that is the most appropriate size for you. Bear in mind that larger units cost more than smaller units and heated units cost more than unheated ones. Most facility managers should be able to help you decide what size a unit you require once you begin a conversation about the items that you need to have stored.

It helps to take a look at the empty units and then in your mind form a picture of how much stuff you own and whether it is too much to fill it or not enough. Bear in mind that while you do not want to pay for a larger storage space than you require, you also need to be able to move around in the space once you rent it. Having a space that isn't jam packed also means that there is a little extra room in case you want to add other items to the unit at a later date.

When the time comes to actually organize all of your belongings and then pack them into boxes and containers you need to have formulated a plan to do so. Being efficient when it comes to organizing your belongings will take plenty of time and focus. The positive side to this is that when it comes time to unload and move your boxes it will seem effortless because of all the planning that went into the preparation!
