It is common knowledge that athletes throughout history have used substances in order to increase their performance. Bodybuilding is no different. Bodybuilders are trying to achieve low body fat as well as high muscle mass. This can be done easily through such substances as steroids. This is illegal in competition and so bodybuilders are turning to natural bodybuilding supplements.
Supplements which primarily contain ingredients naturally found within the body are for the larger part, considered to be natural supplements and are thus legal. While these are deemed to be safe, as with all supplements one is advised to consult a physician if in doubt or if you're currently taking any other form of supplement or medication.
Which Bodybuilding Supplements to Choose
In the case of bodybuilders, protein is of significant importance due to its unrivaled ability to build, repair and maintain desirable muscle mass. While protein is freely available in numerous foods, bodybuilders in general favor whey, a common additive in many foods and drinks which is renowned for the ease with which it can be digested and absorbed by the body. For many people, meat provides most of their protein requirements but because of its fat content, bodybuilders on the other hand, tend to opt for casein, soy and egg whites as a protein booster.
Prohormones is a supplement which has enjoyed immense popularity with bodybuilders as a natural means of increasing testosterone levels. While this is considered a natural supplement, there remains some uncertainty regarding possible long term side effects. As a result, in the United States prohormones are only obtainable with a prescription although it should also be mentioned; prescriptions are freely available to bodybuilders.
When it comes to reducing unwanted body fat, thermogenics are immensely popular, not only with sportsmen but with the general public as well. Commonly known as "fat burners", these supplements tend to suppress appetite while at the same time increase metabolism. In the past the FDA banned a substance known as ephedra, a common fat burner ingredient, because of potentially harmful side effects or in extreme cases, death. It should however be mentioned that while many fat burners no longer contain this ingredient, it is no longer banned.
It's an undeniable fact that supplements are beneficial to bodybuilders but likewise, it's essential that they choose supplements which are both natural and legal. When these natural supplements are incorporated into a comprehensive diet and exercise program, bodybuilders can then be assured they will achieve the desired results.
