How do you Learn to Breathe Poorly and Increase Stress?

As you change from a child to an adult, life changes, as does stress. Adults have a higher volume of stress, which you have learnt to cope poorly with. One of the biggest changes you have made is in your breathing … and remember - you breathe in energy and breathe out stress.

So what has changed and why?

A child laughs out loud and cries to let go stress … immediately.

An adult laughs politely and holds onto stress … after all, you shouldn't display your emotions … especially in public.

Children are told to "stop crying … it's not that bad"... "don't laugh too loud .. you'll annoy someone" … "suck it up … show no fear".

You got it from home, school and the sporting field. You learnt to control your breathing… shorten it, make it tense and also shallow.

You have learnt therefore to have less energy and more stress - through having a poor breathing cycle.

Can you un-learn to Breathe?

Bad grammar aside, any breathing technique can be broken. What you learn can always be changed.

You have learnt to breathe … shallow, short and tense … you can unlearn to breathe … and then breathe deeply in a relaxed and calm manner.

Breathing is a learned response. Changing your breathing is just the same. You just need to learn to breathe better, through breathing exercise. Just like a fitness program… just easier.

To change your breathing, you need to change your resting breathing rate. Many breathing exercises work while you are performing them. They cease to help once you stop. Over a long period of time they can help you breathe a little better.

The best way to change your breath is to change your resting breathing rate.

Why?

If you change your breath at rest, every time you breathe in and out … you are reinforcing the habit to breathe better. The habit becomes stronger and then becomes permanent.

To make a significant difference to your breathing, you need to change your resting breathing rate. You need to remove and prevent stress. Again, why?

Stress is the main cause of altering your breathing rate. Removing and preventing stress will therefore aid you to breathe better. Also as the saying goes …
