So, you splurged on that piece (or two) of chocolate cake or overdid at the buffet table? You think your diet plan is ruined, so why bother? To get back on track with ease, here are some timely tips.

Be nice to yourself!

Everyone indulges sometimes. If you beat yourself up, you may give up on your diet altogether! Instead, think back to your last weight-loss success (maybe you lost two pounds last week?), congratulate yourself, and say, "I'm moving on now," . You are human and humans make mistakes. Complete abstinence from certain foods can lead to binging on them.

Eat Your Words

Keep a food journal for at least one week after your diet takes a fall. Journaling helps you see patterns to your eating so you can avoid making the same mistake twice. It also is not a bad idea in general to keep yourself on track.

TIP:Call a friend! Studies show people with a support group lose more weight.

Sweat it, but just a little.

Avoid running to the gym the next day and overdoing it on the treadmill - you may start to equate exercise with punishment, which will turn you off to exercise! It may do more harm than good. However, adding 10 or 15 minutes to your regular workout the next day can help burn off the extra calories, plus give you a mental boost.

Eat!

Don't starve yourself "to make up for it" the next day, or by 4 p.m., you may be so hungry you'll wind up bingeing again. Instead, return to your regular eating plan at your next meal. And make sure to drink lots of water - dehydration can be mistaken for hunger, making us snack more. It also helps flush fat and toxins out of your body.

Surprise Your Palate!

Have something a little exotic like an artichoke or Japanese food. The novelty of eating something new stimulates "feel-good" brain chemicals, increasing your satisfaction. TIP: When you want to avoid that extra helping of potatoes, brush your teeth! It signals the end of the meal - plus the minty taste is an appetite suppressant, according to a study in the Journal of Periodontology.
