The advantage of those who don't gain enjoy a naturally high metabolism. Thus, those of us seeking to lose weight are seeking ways to raise our metabolic rate.

First, what is a metabolism? It is a greek word derived from the word that means "change". Metabolism is a set of chemical reactions that all living things undergo. For humans, it refers to the rate at which the body converts food into energy to maintain its vital functions.

To lose weight, many believe that skipping meals is the solution, but this actually slows down your metabolism. Knowing what will slow down your metabolism can be just as helpful as knowing what will boost your metabolism.

Fasting or a low calorie diet.
Snacking on high sugared foods; such as sodas, gum and candy.
Lack of exercise
Under-active thyroid known as hypo-thyrodism

All of these can lead to a slower metabolism but there are several ways to increase metabolism. Below are some metabolism boosters that will help you on your quest for an effective weight loss:

Eat breakfast: This will help increase your metabolism because during any period of inactivity, your metabolism slows itself down. Thus, after sleeping, it is important to wake it up by eating breakfast.

Exercise is vital: Some may argue the the best time to exercise is morning while others say mid-day or evening, but what is most important is that you exercise, no matter what time of day it is. A mixture of cardio and weight training is best for effective weight loss. Cardio burns the fat more effectively than weight training, but weight training adds muscle, and every pound of muscle added to your body frame causes fat to burn much more quickly, even while at rest.

Eat more meals, but in small portions: Because long periods without food tends to decrease the metabolism, it is important that you eat more often, regularly. This will also prevent snacking between meals. But the meals must be in small portions.
