Putting Pink In Your Engagement Ring

If you are getting engaged, a diamond ring is the traditional way to go. If you prefer something unique, try putting a pink twist on the ring.

Some of the most popular jewelry in the world was made that way by celebrities. One great example is pink diamond engagement rings, made popular by Jennifer Lopez. When Ben Affleck proposed to J Lo in 2002 with a $1.2 million ring that included a six carat radiant cut pink diamond in the center, women all over the world began looking for pink diamond rings of their own.

Pink is not the only alternative color that diamonds can come in. Some other popular colored diamonds include blue (ranging from a light, faint baby blue to a dark blue similar to a sapphire), yellow, and red. Champagne diamonds are actually white diamonds that are a lower grade - these diamonds are considered to be slightly "brown", but some enjoy the uniqueness of a colored diamond nonetheless. Pink diamond engagement rings are not easy to find; besides the popularity they have achieved in recent years because of celebrities, pink diamonds themselves are not often found in nature. While some diamonds are enhanced (dyed) to achieve certain colors, most women who are looking for quality are not interested in these stones.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades pink diamonds on a scale depending on the amount of color contained in the stone. The grades are Fancy Deep, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Intense, Fancy, Fancy Light and Fancy Faint. Of these grades, most of the pink diamond engagement rings are in the bottom three color categories. It is exceptionally hard to find a pink diamond that is Vivid or Deep, and the few diamonds that do fit into this category are not usually that large. Most of these diamonds are mined in Australia.

Of course, if you can't afford the expense of a pink diamond, or just are unable to find a pink diamond that suits your needs, there are options. Pink sapphires are a less expensive way to get a large pink center stone for your engagement ring. Sapphires are precious gemstones that are related chemically and structurally to diamonds (they are all made of corundum) but they are found in higher quantities, making them more affordable. A pink sapphire with diamond side stones set in an engagement ring is sure to please any woman looking for that pink touch.

While pink diamond engagement rings are popular today, many women realize that they may not be the most stylish long term. Even though jewelers are seeing a surge in purchases of pink diamonds, most engagement rings sold are still of the white diamond variety.
