In the allopathic community hair loss is frequently considered a cosmetic problem, and is not viewed as a medical priority. This is especially true when all standard medical tests come back normal.

The patient is often left on their own to deal with the emotional issues of hair loss-being told it is something they cannot mend and must simply learn to live with. Unable to accept what they've been told, many people start to look elsewhere for solutions.

There are many choices in holistic healing. The one thing they all have in common is that they treat the person as a whole rather than simply treating the symptom. Hair loss is never considered an isolated problem. It is an indication that the body has gone out of balance and needs to be restored both physically and emotionally.

Each modality has its own methods for discovering the underlying cause of hair loss -- each drawing power from the belief that the body has a natural ability to heal itself.

There are many causes and types of hair loss. Most cases can be improved or even reversed. As long as the hair follicle remains alive, and is not damaged or destroyed there is potential for healthy regrowth.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

Chinese medicine views the condition of one's hair as an indication of the internal system. The kidneys are believed to be the primary organ connected to scalp hair. Beautiful lustrous hair is a sign of healthy kidneys, while weakness in the kidneys is thought to cause thinning and prematurely gray hair.

When there is a weakness, the amount and the quality of the blood circulating to the scalp is not sufficient enough to supply nutrition and to support proper hair growth. Several methods such as acupuncture and herbs are used to balance the energy and promote healing.

AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is based on the belief that all people are born with a constitution that is made up of a combination of three energy elements called doshas.

The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. All three doshas are present in every human being in a unique combination. For good physical and emotional health, all three doshas must be balanced. This does not mean that they need to be equal but that they should remain as close to the way they were at birth as possible.

A physical or emotional problem such as hair loss signifies that the doshas are out of balance, and would be restored through foods, herbs, yoga, massage and lifestyle.

HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy is based on the law of similars stating that "like cures like". Homeopathic remedies are made from various plant, mineral and animal substances that are diluted in an intricate, precise scientific manner.

Physical symptoms, emotions, lifestyle, nutrition, personality and other factors are noted and taken into consideration when evaluating the individual.

There are many remedies that are used for hair loss. After evaluating all the information the homeopathic physician will recommend the remedy, dosage and potency most suited to the individual. This is known as a "constitutional treatment".

AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy works to establish healthy hair growth by getting the scalp in the best condition possible in order to create an ideal environment that enables the hair to grow with ease. The essential oils used in aromatherapy thoroughly cleanse and nourish the scalp. They increase blood flow to the scalp and transport oxygen to the root. They regulate sebum production and ph levels. They have cellular regenerative properties to help keep the growth cycle active.

Essential oils are easily absorbed through the skin. They are very compatible with skin, scalp and hair, making them an ideal natural cosmetic. Many people see an improvement in the way their hair looks and feels after the first use.

HYPNOTHERAPY

Some hypnotherapists believe that you can stimulate new hair growth based on belief alone. In the hypnotic state you will be guided to create a new cellular memory in your follicles, directing them to grow beautiful healthy hair.

You will see yourself in the desired condition feeling your long flowing healthy hair. You may even feel a tingling sensation in you scalp. You will gain insight on how to achieve this goal, becoming excited and motivated to succeed-- and believing you can.

These are just a few of the natural healing systems that can be used to enhance hair growth. The first step in any hair loss recovery plan is to identify the cause and type of hair loss and address the underlying issues - including medical conditions, if applicable. But remember hair loss is not an isolated problem. In order to improve hair the entire body and soul must nourish as a whole.
