Accessing your Own Student Loan Information for Consolidation

As you may or may not be aware of there have been some changes to lender access of the NSLDS, the National Student Loan Database. Lenders will no longer be able to look up your loan information for you until you have committed to consolidate with them and signed an application. This will make it much harder to shop around for the best deal but it is not impossible, you just need to be prepared and gather your loan information yourself. It is pretty easy for you to get access to your personal information from the NSLDS if you follow the steps below.
First you need a PIN number. If you have filled out your FAFSA within the past year you can use that PIN number for access. If not then you need to:
1. Go to http://www.PIN.ed.gov and click on the Apply Now button.
2. Review the privacy disclosure and click Next.
3. Fill out the PIN form. Make sure you use an email address that you have access to.
4. Click on "agree to the terms"
5. Click on submit application
You will receive your PIN number by email in about 2 days. When you receive the number:
1. Go to http://www.NSLDS.ed.gov
2. Accept the privacy notice.
3. Choose your encryption. For Firefox use the left option, for IE use the right option. For other browsers or if you aren't sure which one you are using use the right option.
4. Log in with your PIN and the identifying information they ask you. You should then be on your personal loan page.
There are a couple pieces of information your consolidator needs from each loan listed to process your loan application.
1. Total amount of the loan
2. Interest rate
3. Who is servicing the loan
This can all be found by clicking the "loan detail" button on the top right corner of each individual loan box. The easiest way to transfer this information to your consolidation company is to print out the first page with all of your loans listed then the loan detail page of all the individual loans and fax them. They should also be able to take the information over the phone. Just a couple simple steps and your student loan consolidation is underway!
