Merrion Square

Merrion Square is one of the finest Georgian Squares in Dublin. It can be found south east of the city centre at the back of Trinity College just a short walk from St. Stephen's Green.

The square was established in the early 1700's and was at one time a mainly residential area, in fact some famous Irish people like William Butler Yeats once lived at No 82 Merrion Square and the political leader Daniel O'Connell lived at No 58 Merrion Square for a while.

Even if you don't plan to stay in Merrion Square, you should definitely visit here during your trip to Dublin and admire its gardens, sculptures and the wonderful architecture of the Georgian buildings with their brightly coloured doors and fanlights.

There are many notable attractions located in Merrion Square like Leinster House (seat of Irish government), the National Gallery of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland.

If you want to stay within walking distance of this charming part of Dublin city then stay at the O'Callaghan Mont Clare Hotel, the O'Callaghan Alexander Hotel, the O'Callaghan Davenport Hotel or the exclusive Merrion Hotel.

These hotels have a fantastic location near Merrion Square, so they make a great base for sightseeing, shopping or nightlife.

Fitzwilliam Square

Fitzwilliam Square can be found about a 5 minute walk from Merrion Square. It's much smaller than its counterpart and was developed between 1760 and 1850, so it was one of the last Georgian Squares to be built in Dublin.

One of Dublin's hidden attractions can be found here at Number 29. From the outside, it appears as a very simple 4 storey townhouse, but once inside you'll find a restored Georgian townhouse which will give you a glimpse of what life was like for a middle class family in Georgian Dublin in the 1800's.

Fitzwilliam Square is a quaint, peaceful and charming part of the city to base yourself, yet it's within walking distance of St. Stephen's Green, Merrion Square, Trinity College, Grafton Street and lots more.

If you want hotel accommodation close to here choose Longfields Hotel, The Conrad Hotel, The Premier Suites Dublin or the Leeson Court Hotel.
