A Quick History of GPS

GPS,or the Global Positioning System was originally developed by the Department of Defense for use in weapons delivery. The testing of GPS equipment was started in 1977, in Arizona. Satellite launching was completed by 1994,and there were 24 satellites. GPS use by civilians was quickly developed. GPS technology uses satellites to to give three dimentional global positioning to a receiver.

There are many different types of gps units on the market today. Basically you get what you pay for. Some varities of gps only work in a limited area and only have a few functions. Most do not work in all fifty states,or provide worldwide coverage.

With the recent development of more sophisticated gps units, which have many more functions than ever before;it is now possible to get satellite photos of your vehicle in mere seconds. It can integrate with all your exisiting alarms, can interrupt, the starter, can locate the vehicle, its speed and its direction of travel, and offers worldwide coverage, and many more functions.

With the many fatalities on the road, teenage drinking, speeding, carjacking, cars breaking down, people getting lost, and people being abducted and murdered, parents need to know there is a way to protect their loved ones. Parents can know where their children are at any time. Also: people are living longer, and many families are becoming primary caretakers for their parents. Caretakers of the elderly with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, need to be reassured where their loved ones are, especially elderly drivers with Alzheimers, who can easily become lost.

Businesses and fleet managers need to have a cost effective way to keep track of their vehicles and employees. They cannot afford to lose money with the increased cost of fuel. They need to make sure their drivers are actually on the road. There is also the potential their employees might be moonlighting. Also there are many unsafe driver on the road. Trucks can speed and cause accidents. New and used car dealerships, and rental car agencies can also save money by being able to track a stolen vehicle across any state line or beyond.

So now you see the many needs and uses for gps technology.
