But when ever we are at any of Maria's family gatherings everybody speaks Spanish because that is their first language. I've always thought that the Spanish language sounded beautiful but I had never learnt more than the basic words for thank you very much (muchas gracias) and please (por favor) and good night (buenos noches) and other general words and phrases that most people know. At these family get togethers I always felt like an outsider.
So a while ago I decided I was going to learn to speak Spanish. I went on the net and began surfing to download Spanish lessons to my computer so I could learn on my own and at my own pace. That is one of the great things about this day and age. You can download almost anything off the net.
After I found a site to download Spanish lessons I immediately began to study the lessons. I did this without telling my wife because I wanted to surprise her and not only her but her family as well at the next family get together.
For weeks I studied and studied in secret. I was lucky because I had a friend at work who was also of Spanish heritage and I could practice my Spanish with him. It didn't take me too long before I could speak more than a two or three word Spanish sentence.
After about 5 weeks I was getting quite good - though my pronunciation was sometimes a bit off - I was very proud of myself. The next family gathering was only a few days away and I was ready to surprise Maria and her family.
When Maria and I arrived at her family's house I didn't speak very much and when I did I spoke in English. But when dinner was finished I stood up and tapped my wine glass to get every ones attention.
When all eyes were on me I turned and said to my beautiful Maria - for the very first time in Spanish - My love, you are the love of my life and I cherish and adore you. Happy 10th anniversary.
Everybody looked at me with surprise and then Maria's father stood up hugged me. The whole room, filled with all of Maria's family, began to applaud and laugh. For the rest of the evening I spoke only Spanish.
And the sparkle in Maria's eyes when ever she looked at me told me that the second smartest thing I had ever done was to download Spanish lessons to my computer.
The smartest thing I ever did was to marry my wife.
