If you are looking for an effective way of building your customer list, SMS is the way to go. With the right message you can easily get your potential client's e-mail addresses and you can easily tailor your campaign depending on your current needs and your targeted market.

Inferred Permission and The Spam Act

Although SMS is covered by "The Spam Act", you can still send SMS message to a cold list by making sure that you have an inferred permission. Inferred permission only means that their mobile numbers are available publicly - they either provided their mobile numbers to a number of websites on the internet, yellow pages, newspaper or any other public listings. This gives you the inferred permission to send them marketing message.

Free Report - Free Gift

Since you are sending your message to a cold list, it is best that you offer something of value in exchange of information. There is an exchange of value happening here, it's not dollars but it is the exchange of their name and details. This will help build relationship and you want to get that permission so that when you write to them you can help build the rapport.

Your Target Market

You need to understand the medium that you are using in order for your message to be effective. When sending out your SMS message you need to know that there are at least 3 different groups for you to target. The Y generation, The X generation and the Baby Boomers. The Y generation loves SMS and they love using this technology and will be receptive to any kind of SMS they receive, even marketing messages. The X generation and the Baby Boomer however is different, they just tolerate this technology. They would use SMS just to get in touch with their children, or some of them knows how to read SMS, but don't know how send SMS. With this in mind, you can tailor your message to your targeted group.

Your Message

SMS message is limited to 160 characters so you need to craft your message with that limitations. You need be concise and clear on your purpose and your objectives so you can have a successful SMS marketing campaign. Also remember your targeted group when you write your message, keeping in mind that the Y generations can easily SMS their e-mail address to you while the X and the Baby Boomers would rather call in their e-mail addresses.

A sample SMS message can be like this for the Y Generation:

"Hi, get your free report - 5 ways to make money using SMS (valued at $97). SMS your email address to this number, offer expires within 48 hours."

A sample SMS message can be like this for the Y Generation and Baby Boomers:
