There are plenty of mattresses available when we go shopping for a new bed; it can be confusing over which one is best unless we actually lie on them ourselves. Fortunately many bed shops will allow us to do this, to get on to the bed and give it a test drive. It's important we get the right mattress for us, everyone's body is different and so some people may prefer a certain type of mattress whilst someone else may find it incredibly uncomfortable.

In fact you will only know which one is good for you once you try them out, and you'd be surprised at how this doesn't mean you have to spend large amounts as some people may be comfortable enough on a cheaper mattress, likewise it doesn't have to be the softest mattress either, some people find a harder mattress to be more comfortable.

After we have found the right mattress for us we will want it to last a long time, a good few years at least. In order to make sure our mattresses last their full expected life span we need to make sure that we take good care of it and one of the key ways to do this is to turn it regularly.

Turning your mattress basically means that you are making sure that it does not have all of the pressure put on it in one place. Turning over can allow the other side to recover its springiness as well as ensuring our body is supported correctly throughout the duration of our mattresses lifespan.

If we don't turn our mattress regularly then it could be prone to sagging or springs being damaged, over time making a more uncomfortable sleeping experience. If the mattress sags then you may find you are getting much warmer in bed as your body is closer to the mattress and has a reduced space for airflow. This is great for the winter but in the summer it can make sleeping comfortably quite tough.

Some newer mattresses do not need to be turned by can be spun round 90° to spread the weight distribution and prevent any of the problems mentioned previously. Most beds have carry handles on the side of the mattress to make it easier to manoeuvre but it is still recommended that you get two people to lift it as a mattress can be quite heavy and if you already have back trouble then you could do some extra damage.

Keep a close eye on your mattress' shape over time and it is recommended that you rotate or turn your mattress once or twice a year. This should make your mattress last a long time and not need to be replaced for many years.
