Blu-ray and Java Technology

What do laser beams and coffee beans have in common? Nothing, unless you're talking about Blu-ray technology and Java technology. Java from Sun Microsystems is a cross-platform technology that has added interactive functionality to websites across the internet for many years. Not content to sit on the internet only, Java is now moving to Smart Cards, mobile devices, and gadgets near you.

Blu-ray disc players and recorders incorporate Java as a mandatory part of the Blu-ray standard as specified by the Blu-ray Disc Association. The BD-J (Bluray Disc Java) is a programming environment for Blu-ray system that allows movie studios to deliver interactive, programmable titles to Blu-ray disc players. While that sounds awfully technical, what this means to you is that BD-J allows for interactive menus and internet updates for accessing additional content via the World Wide Web.
So what? DVDs have interactive menus. Yes and no. The menus found on DVDs are far more primitive with pre-rendered MPEGs and selectable images. Really, it's just a fancy list of choices - not true interactivity. With Java incorporated into the Blu-ray disc, viewers can customize their experience, even going to the internet and selecting additional subtitle options or program features that may not have been available when the disc was first released.

Other fantastic features that Java makes possible when combined with Blu-ray players include the ability to download current movie previews, download related games, and buy additional Blu-ray discs.

The mandate for BD-J promises a rich, interactive experience for Bluray viewers. In addition, Java for Blu-ray disc players gives Blu-ray technology a decided edge over the competing formats such as HD-DVD. Don't get us wrong, Blu-ray already has a competitive edge but the inclusion of Java technology sharpens it. Touché HD-DVD. Game over.
