Building traffic and increasing the page rank of your website is an essential piece to having a successful business. Certainly one of the most efficient ways to do both is through directory submissions. There are a number of different website directories that you can submit your site too, some better than others. However, prior to submitting your website there are some things that need to be considered.

It is important that you realize that website directories are not search engines. The key difference between the two is that with directory submissions your website is edited and managed by human beings. When it comes to search engines, there are programs that look over your website and track specific things across your pages. This can make it a little more difficult to get into directories, but more worthwhile if you do.

There is no limit to how many directory submissions you make, but it is also a waste of your time if you submit your website to directories with no value. Page rank is certainly one of the key things people tend to look at, which is a bit misleading. Page rank has become the way of looking at a websites value and popularity it seems like anymore. However, there is much more to it than that.

By researching into the directory, you will be able to dig deeper and find out truly how valuable the directory is. For example, you may find one directory with only a 1 or 2 page rank. Then come to find out, that directory was brand new when they received that page rank and will soon be moving up to a page rank of 5 or 6. The point is that you can certainly set the bar high for what kinds of page ranks you would like your directories to have, but take into consideration other things as well before writing them off.

As mentioned, you can submit to a number of different website directories, but be careful which ones you do submit to. There are directories that are niche specific, and submitting an unrelated website to the directory can have strict consequences. You should also be careful about making too frequent directory submissions as this can get you banned for life from the directory.

The last thing to know when making directory submissions is that traffic does not come over night. Everything on the internet takes time to advertise, promote and finally sell your ideas. Because of this, you can't give up on certain directories after a couple of weeks because you are seeing no results. With patience and continuous dispersing of content, you will in time see the effects of your directory submissions.
