Dog owners with dog barking problems have my sympathy. Being subjected to the continuous noise of a dog barking is not a nice experience, and it can be very difficult to cope with. It is bad enough hearing a dog barking in the distance, let alone close up and in your home. So, how do you stop your dog from barking?
You might think telling your dog to 'Be Quiet' is the solution to the problem. The dog's understanding of this command is that it is alright to bark, so he carries on barking. But wait, your dog might be barking for a reason. Possibly to warn you about something you are currently unaware of.
Dogs have been known to warn their owners about gas leaks, for instance. If this is what he is trying to do, it is only right and proper to reward him. The best thing to do immediately is to get him to "sit", so that you have now taken charge of the situation and your dog no longer needs to bark.
When trying to stop dogs from barking it helps to remember why they are barking in the first place. If the reason is to gain attention, resist the temptation to tell him to stop barking, and just ignore him. If you tell him to stop barking he will carry on because he has won your attention. If you choose to ignore the barking, he will stop, if the reason he is barking is attention seeking.
A useful tip to remember when your dog will not stop barking is to create a sudden noise, such as ringing a bell. This diverts his attention from persistent barking, and you can then reward him for stopping, and divert his attention to something else.
