As owners get more and more attached to their pets, they are constantly looking for new products and ideas that will improve their pet's quality of life. One of most uncomfortable times for an animal occurs when they need to relieve themselves. If they are not setup with say newspaper or a litter box inside, they are at your mercy: they can only relieve themselves when you let them. If you're home, that might be immediately, "5 more minutes", or even longer. If you're not home, well let's just hope you let them out as soon as you get home! Adding pet doors solves this problem by letting your pet come and go as they please. If you're lucky enough to have a backyard or patio, adding a pet door to your patio door can not only improve your pet's quality of life, but yours as well.
Patio pet doors are designed to work in conjunction with your existing sliding glass door. There are two types of patio doggie doors, semi-permanent and temporary. Both are designed to simply attach to your existing rails and frames, but a semi-permanent design will be attached with screws whereas a temporary design will often use simple locking pins. No patio pet door will work with your existing lock, however they will come with their own lock that will be about 12" above the old lock.
There are many different manufacturers of patio animal doors who make a wide variety of doors to fit any budget. Since patio pet doors are much larger than normal doggie doors, they cost more too. Cheaper units can be had for as low as $200, while high-end units can run up to $1,000! The higher-end units do look the best, however, and also provide the greatest amount of insulation properties due to their advanced construction techniques.
Most patio dog doors will come in single pane or double pane configurations. If the door only has a single pane, that means that it only has 1 layer of glass. Double-paned models have 2 window panes, separated by a layer of air. The air separating both panes is essential to quality insulation, and the added material drives up the cost.
Your pet will love the benefit that a patio pet door provides. Being able to go outside whenever they want is priceless. The only person who will love it more than your pet is you.
