Going Green The Easy Way

Climate change continues to be a serious worry for many people. To improve the prospects for the earth's sustainability, more and more people are switching to environment-friendly habits to help preserve it for their children. Green living can be easily incorporated into our everyday lives - from the daily commute to tending the garden.

A sudden change to green living is likely too much for most people, and might discourage them from putting into practice some important eco-friendly moves. The good news is that there are a lot of small ways you can go green and do your part for the environment.

Pollution is a major problem in many areas. Much of it comes from factories, but that's not the only thing contributing to global warming. Automobiles, too, contribute significant amounts of pollution to the air.

With so many vehicles making their way through the streets, the sheer volume of pollutants being produced is wiping out the atmosphere's ozone layer. If you would like to do your part to preserve the environment, consider car pooling, cycling or walking to work, taking public transportation, or even purchasing a new hybrid vehicle that's less damaging to the air you breathe.

Even small modifications to your everyday routine can grant a respite to the earth that will benefit future generations. For example, start by taking a look through your home to see what kinds of green changes you can make. A simple place to begin is with the type of light bulbs you use.

The standard incandescent bulbs contribute to higher electricity bills and emit more carbon dioxide. If you switch out your current incandescent bulbs and replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs, you'll save the environment and will also save on your electric bill. If you must, replace your current incandescent bulbs slowly over time with compact fluorescent bulbs, since these can be expensive. For example, you can switch out one or two incandescent bulbs every month with compact fluorescent bulbs come if your budget does not support replacing all at once.

You can also seal any gaps around your windows or doors to keep any cool drafts from going into the house. This can cost you more money. Your house should be well insulated so that you can cut down on energy "escapes," especially during the wintertime. The better insulated your house, the less your furnace will have to run, which will save you money and will save energy, too.

Next, have a look at your appliances. Are they older? If they are, they probably consume much more energy than they need to. Of course, you can replace older models with new ones as the need arises, but this may not always be practical. However, even if you cannot replace all of your appliances now, you can do other things that will help save you energy.

As one example, you might open the oven door several times to check and see if something is done. This wastes energy, since the harder an appliance has worked, the more energy it consumes. This means you waste much more energy, which in turn is hard on the environment. Every time you open the oven door, the temperature drops about 25 degrees. Then it has to consume more energy to get back up to the original temperature.

Recycling is an excellent way to save our environment. Try to buy as many products as you can that can be recycled. Avoid the non-recyclable items such as Styrofoam cups. The less trash that has to be burned - or buried into our soil - the better off our planet will be.

Though these small changes may not seem like they could do much to help the environment, they will actually help a great deal. Even the little things we do will add up in the end and make a substantial difference in the amount of natural resources available for future generations. Embrace the environment, get involved in living green for our earth, and make a difference.
