Germs are everywhere. Germs get into your system through your mucus membranes. How do the germs get into your system? Think about this. A person next to you is holding a sick baby. The baby sneezes and spreads her germs. The mom takes a used tissue and wipes the baby's face and then brushes the diaper bag off with her hands. A few minutes later on the commute trip, the baby drops her bottle. You kindly reach down and hand it to the mother, who in turn shakes your hand (The same one she used to wipe her babys nose) and introduces herself while she is thanking you for picking up her baby's bottle that was on the floor under of dozens of peoples feet. The germs from the baby are now on your hand from touching the mothers hand.

You exit the train and go to the coffee store for breakfast. You order a hot coffee, but to make sure you wont burn your mouth again, you stick your finger in the coffee to test the temperature and lick it off. You rub some dust out of your eye that got blown into it when the heat kicked in. The paper looks interesting so you pick it up to read. But the morning paper is stuck together with some jelly from a roll, so you lick your finger to get a better grip on the page to turn it. You itch your nose with the same hand too.

You have introduced into your body, at least 4 times in the last 30 minutes, the same cold germs the toddler had.

Do you wonder when you did that?? Here's when you did it. Lets retrace your steps.

1. Putting your finger into your coffee to test the temperature of it.
2. Touching your eyes.
3. Licking your finger to turn the page of the newspaper.
4. Rubbing your nose.

Within 24 to 36 hours you will start having symptoms. If you around people while you have symptoms, the chances are very high that you will give them the same virus you have. Why? Because everything you touch will have the germs on it. How could you have avoided this?

By washing your hands before you ordered your coffee!

15 to 20 seconds of washing your hands with soap and water can stop the spread of germs. The germs enter our bodies through the mucus membranes in our eyes, nose, and mouth. When you touch those areas, you are literally putting the germ into your body!

If soap and water is not around you, carry a small bottle of personal hand sanitizer. These work well when you are in a pinch. They don't substitute for soap and water, but will definitely be a great weapon to fight germ warfare this winter season!
