I as the Basis for a Philosophy

If "I" were to be the only basis for a philosophy, then we would have the unreserved premise that everything which I meet must be deduced from myself. I think this could be the case, but if it is really so, then it is hard for me to explain the countless experiences which appear to be contrary to the desires of my self. No, a much better explanation for such things is that they exit in reality in a way which does not depend on me. If I am real then they are real too for the same reasons. The reality of these experiences, or the sources of them and of I myself do not depend on an ultimate basis. This ultimate basis is, certainly, independent of its after-effects. To cut through this marsh of unintelligibility, let's name myself and all these things that influence me, nature. That on which nature depends for the property of real existence we will name supernature.

It is only possible to establish an all-encompassing philosophical system when we consider this supernature as our initial point. To do in another way is an exercise in vainness. If all the things are independent of me because of their property of real existence, then it would be absurd to try to create a system of thought on myself. Such a try would be like attempting to build the Empire State Building on the shoulders of men rather than the foundation on which the men also must stand.

Certainly, we are still faced with the questions concerning this supernature, and what it is really like, but the answer to this question we will provide a little bit later.
