From animated adventures and Oscar winning films, to new takes on old stories; 2010 is packed full of blockbuster DVD releases to keep you entertained. Whether you are seeking edge of the seat action or simply want to have a laugh, you are guaranteed to find something that ticks all the boxes.

Breaking through all the boundaries is the critically acclaimed film Avatar - an epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal. This is the highest grossing film of all time and it secured three Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.

In addition to the Oscar success, Avatar won two Golden Globes and was also winner of the BAFTA Awards for Best Production Design and Special Visual Effects amongst many other awards.

The director, James Cameron, previously won three Oscars in 1998 for his film Titanic - including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing.

Avatar has created so much attention due to its extraordinary special and digital effects, coupled with a compelling storyline; all of which combined has breathed new life into the science fiction genre. The film had an age rating of 12a at the cinema and is rated 12 for home viewing, meaning most of the family can enjoy the action together.

Another Oscar winner released on DVD during 2010 is The Hurt Locker, which was awarded the prestigious prize for Best Picture. Coincidentally, the director of The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow, is the former wife of Avatar director James Cameron.

The Hurt Locker also won BAFTA Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound as well as achieving Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

The film is a poignant portrayal of the lives of the soldiers responsible for disarming bombs in the heat of combat. For an accurate insight into one of the world's most dangerous jobs, this is a must-see.

If animated action is your preference then the release of the Pixar movie Up should have you paying attention, as the winner of Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. This film has a "u" rating, meaning it is suitable for everyone, no matter how young or old.

Another film that is popular with all the family is Guy Ritchie's representation of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic, Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law join forces to create an action packed adventure with a solid plot.

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island and John Hillcoat's The Road are another two releases set to be popular in 2010.

Whatever your taste and regardless of whether you need an Avatar DVD or a documentary, shopping for the latest DVD releases online can save you a pretty penny so it's worthwhile logging on and finding the latest filmic treats via your internet browser.
