Google SEO: How to Out Rank the Competition

Yahoo! and MSN are good sources of free search engine traffic, but Google delivers more than both combined.

No wonder everyone starting a website wants to know how to get a top ten position in Google. We see other sites similar to ours up there and are curious how we can do the same.

If you read what Google says about how to get your site to rank higher, they will tell you to increase the number of high-quality links to your site.

Finding these high-quality sites and having them link to you is easy. All you have to do is search for them using Google. Just type in the keywords, which you would like to ultimately be found under in the top ten.

We can assume that Google considers the sites that shows up at the top are high-quality sites and that they achieved their ranking because other high-quality sites are linking to them.

Here's how to find out who links to them… Type into the search box "link:" (without the quotes) and then one of the URLs of the top listed sites. Google will return pages showing the sites that link back to it. Repeat the search for each of the other top ten sites.

With this list of sites that link to the top ten sites (plus the top ten sites themselves) in Google, you may contact each for a reciprocal link. In a reciprocal link arrangement, you place their link on your own link directory (sometimes called a resource page), and then you'll email the webmasters showing them you have added their link and ask to have your link placed on their site too.

Many of the webmasters will accept your link exchange request. However, some won't. The easiest sites to approach are the ones that have a link exchange program set up. They'll have a link directory and may have a web form for you to fill in and submit your site information. With your own site, you should have a web form as well for link exchange request to make it convenient for webmasters who may approach you.

Of course you should be selective of who you will trade links with. Think about some criteria that a site should meet before you will link back to them. The most important thing for ranking high in Google is that each site you exchange links with has a topic that relates to yours.

Set aside some time during your week looking for potential link partners. Eventually, you should start noticing how your rankings in Google have improved, due to getting high-quality links with a little effort on your part.
