A colander is a useful kitchen instrument used to separate the food from liquids. Its bowl shape has tiny holes, draining the liquid below while still allowing the food to remain in the colander. Colanders are perfect for both hot and cold ingredients, but take extra precaution when handling hot items.

Drain Using the Colander Only

You can cook and drain foods using a colander only. The first thing you need to do is to prepare the area for draining. If you have a swinging faucet, push it to the other side. Clear out any items in your sink, except for the colander. Place it in the sink with the opening facing up. If the food you'll be handling is hot, such as pasta, place a hot pad on the counter within arm's reach. Most colanders have 2 handles on either side, so you can grab it with both hands. Lightly toss it up and down in order to remove the extra liquid off. You can then pour the liquid-free food back to its original container or to a separate, new serving dish.

Cook Using the Colander Only

Many people don't have time to whip home cooked meals because of their busy schedules. In fact, many have opt for take out or eating fast food because it's fast and cheap-but not necessarily healthy. Another option is for you to cook using a colander, some Tupperware and a microwave.

Tupperware is designed fit for cooking in the microwave. You do not need to worry about getting toxic chemicals because it's absolutely safe even when heated. Try placing the meat in the colander, place grease drippings to your Tupperware so you can use it later as gravy.

One can also cook ground beef through the colander. Marinate beef with seasoning and place it in the colander. After a few minutes, put it in the Tupperware, cove and cook in the microwave for a few minutes.
