Surprise Costs When You Move

Moving is a stressful time and nothing is more aggravating than discovering additional costs you were never told about or did not think of.

As exhausting, time consuming and stressful as moving is, one of your most important concerns should be surprise costs while moving. When you prepare yourself for these costs ahead of time, a lot of common yet unexpected money stressors can be eliminated. From hidden moving company fees to restocking the kitchen, being prepared for these expenses is the best way to have a less stressful move.

When hiring a moving company, be sure to have them outline all fees, costs and so on. This includes any special policies they may have such as requiring your sofas to be wrapped. They will charge you for this service or refuse to move your sofa. Additionally, if they will be doing the packing, knowing the cost of each box -usually upwards of two dollars- can help you determine whether or not you should find recycled boxes elsewhere. Many individuals that have moved recently will give away their old boxes for free. Moving companies will often use boxes you supply, and this can save hundreds of dollars in the moving process.

If your move is taking you cross-country, include transit costs in your moving budget. Whether you are driving your cars to your new location or flying, gas and airfare can add up. You will probably need to stay in a hotel for at least one night. Don't forget to budget for those meals on the go, and include extra money for snacks and drinks. To avoid some expenses, try using any discounts available. For instance, most hotels give discounts for AAA members as well as other discount programs.

The actual move isn't the only costly part of relocating. Because you will not want to pay the extra money to move twenty bottles of hot sauce and dressing, and can't keep other perishable goods for long, you will have to restock when you arrive at your new home. Not only will this influence you to eat out for several days or weeks after you move, but you will eventually have to take a super shopping trip to make your fridge feel like home again. Since most moving companies won't transport cleaning chemicals, you will likely need to throw away and re-buy all of those cleaning essentials.

When preparing to move and budgeting for these costs, it is important to include these hidden expenditures. Although they may seem miniscule at first glance, they certainly add up. Preparing ahead of time and budgeting for these expenses will ease the moving process for both your mind and your money.
