Choices: The Never Ending Buffet

I was standing in line at my favorite fast food joint the other day trying to figure out what I wanted for lunch when my brain shut down.

I had ten different meals to choose from, seven soft drink choices, three meal size choices, four choices for nugget sauce, and three different pie flavors to decide on. And the option to super size was also included.

When you get to the cash register the fast food business doesn't want you spending anytime thinking. You have people waiting behind you and a cashier in front. You had better know what you want by this time. Me, I still wasn't sure so I went with my standard choice. Number One with Coke - no lettuce on my burger.

Choice is everywhere nowadays. And there is an awful lot of it to wade through. At my local discount superstore there are maybe a thousand different movies I can buy. I have to wade through giant bins hunting for the good stuff. Apple's iTunes store has over three million different songs for sale.

There is another dimension to this era of almost unlimited choice. Whenever I visit Best Buy to look at HDTVs there are over forty different brands of television on display. I can choose from a premium brand, a mid-tier brand, and a cheap brand at a ridiculously cheap price. In your mind you start seesawing between high price plus quality vs. low price plus cheap components. And you end up wondering how much cheap you can live with to save a few hundred dollars.

I suspect having so much choice is a double edged sword. Prices come down but the amount of stress in our lives go up. We can fall into the trap of buying something because it is very inexpensive. Why not, at this price we ask ourselves.

Life was easier twenty years ago. For just about everything there was the premium brand, like Sony, or a cheap alternative that wasn't a Sony. Choice was simple.
