The disaster in Haiti has caused devastation for countless individuals.  For the most part, compassion, goodness and generosity have prevailed to help those in need; unfortunately, some will prey on this vulnerable population.  The women of Haiti have always been at risk for sex trafficking because of the extreme poverty and impoverishment in that country.  Forced prostitution for women was a reality before the earthquake, and now the problems have worsened.  Amidst the disaster chaos, traffickers pursue helpless women with even more vigilance.  There are several things the Haitian government can do to lessen the chances of sex trafficking. Long term support projects and protection through education can help prevent future problems.
While the Haiti earthquake created hardships for everyone, women are especially vulnerable, and are much more likely to die than men because they lack mobility and access to resources, have more family responsibilities, and are more likely to be susceptible to physical danger. The reasons women are especially vulnerable after disasters include the fact that:

women are usually caregivers to children and elderly, and are less able to evacuate or look for work further away
women generally occupy inferior social positions in poor countries, lack formal jobs, transportation, communication systems and secure housing
pregnant or lactating women need additional food and water
women and girls have a higher risk of physical or sexual violence because they are left alone, or are living in temporary shelters
the stress after a natural disaster also increases the likelihood of domestic violence, and women have a harder time leaving a temporary shelter to remove themselves from abuse.

In Haiti, as in many disaster areas around the world, women need help in many areas, including:

housing
safety
equal access to disaster relief resources
job opportunities
health care
and equality before the law.

One way to begin providing women these much needed resources and opportunities is to include them in the planning and implementing of disaster relief programs. By the very nature of their position in society women are better adept at communicating, organizing, and ensuring resources are equally distributed.
