Share Love on Thanks Giving Day

Thanks Giving day is very important festival that is celebrated by Christians throughout the world. It is a time for extravagant and delicious meals like stuffed turkey and pumpkin pie. Indian corn holiday parades and balloons are of significant importance and make it a day of laughter and happiness. People celebrate Thanks Giving Day with full zest and it is a way to thank God for his bestowed mercies on us.

Thanks Giving Day is celebrated since the 16th century in America, when Britisher's settled in Massachusetts. These settlers were known as Pilgrims, and had come to America to practice and spread their religion. Unfortunately, they arrived during the winter season and many of them died due to the hunger as it was too late to plant crops. It was Indians who helped them with the food and taught them fishing. The next year after the crops harvested and the pilgrims gave thanks to God at a feast to which they invited the Indians. The then governor of the Pilgrim's William Bradford announced that Thanks Giving Day will be shared by various colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. Thanks Giving Day is celebrated on 29th November. In fact, every year, Thanks Giving Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November, which is November 27th this year. It marks the unofficial beginning to the winter holiday season not just in Europe and US but worldwide.

It is a day of enjoyment with families and friends and having a big feast. The meal usually comprises of traditional roasted turkey with stuffing and gravy, a sweet cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. In fact, there has been an introduction of recent Thanks Giving Day tradition and that is to sit after dinner and watch professional football game on TV with the family. Well, one can say that Thanks Giving Day is almost like Christmas. People visit their families, parents and friends on this auspicious day. One can witness the celebration mood everywhere. The city is decorated with all kinds of lights and decoration items and one can also come across carnivals and shopping festivals taking place. Though various countries celebrate the occasion of Thanks Giving Day on different dates but that does not affect the festive mood at all. The date and customs could be different but not the spirit and desire to make a hay day with Thanks Giving Day.

If we go by the historical facts then, one will come to know that in 1817, the state of New York adopted Thanks Giving Day as an annual holiday. But by middle of 1800s, other states followed and adopted the practice. In fact, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Thanks Giving Day as a national holiday and gave it a proclamation and still the tradition is followed and practiced by each president of the country. Hence, Thanks Giving Day is way of thanking God for all his blessings that He has bestowed on us whether materialistic or non-materialistic. It has taught us a lesson of sharing and bonding with each other in good or bad times.
