The world's most common ailment is the common cold, or just colds. Colds are caused by a viral infection on the body's upper respiratory tract. There is no single cure for the common cold since the virus that causes it has several hundred strains. These strains are caused by mutation. Since the colds virus easily mutates, drugs that that target a particular strain are not effective in combating all the other strains. In other words, a drug that targets a particular colds virus strain can be effective to treat only that strain. Because of viral mutations, the virus, so to speak, develops a resistance against the drug. Another drug may be invented to fight the mutated strain. However, continuous mutations of the colds virus make it difficult for drug manufacturers to come up with a single form of medication to fight against all colds virus strains.

The symptoms of colds include sneezing and runny nose. In many other cases, the cold is accompanied by cough, sore throat and nasal congestion. The nasal congestion is caused by the mucus on the lungs. A person with colds will naturally sneeze in order to expel the mucus. The mucus, when expelled from the mouth, is referred to as phlegm. Thus, there is no technical difference between mucus and phlegm aside from the fact that mucus is called phlegm when it passed through the throat and is expelled from the mouth.

In the 1960s, research showed that vitamin C can help fight colds. Vitamin C supplements could prevent the occurrences of the common cold and minimize the effects when one contracts the disease. Doctors recommend fruits that have high vitamin C content, such as oranges, citrus, and apples, for the prevention and treatment of colds.

The common cold is never cured by antibiotics. A person's probability in acquiring the colds virus increases when the body does not have enough rest. The reason for this is that the body's defenses weaken and are more prone to viral infection. Sleeping 6.5 to 8 hours and avoiding irregular sleeping habits generally helps the body to perform in tip-top shape and makes it more resistant to common ailments.

Vitamins A, C, and Colloidal Silver help fight colds and also help in their prevention. Vitamin A enhances our immune system especially if we have colds or influenza. Vitamin C helps in the production of antibodies that helps fight colds. Selenium, on the other hand, if taken with a combination of zinc and other anti-oxidants, helps greatly to fight the symptoms of colds.
