Networking sites are great right? You can find lots of people and lots of people can find you. But how do you use this powerful tool in a way that is useful to your business. Don't get me wrong, I like to show off my kids as much as the next person, but if I am going to spend my time building my networking site, I want as much payoff as possible. I want the RIGHT people to find me and I want to find the right people.

I built one of the largest networking sites on LinkedIn and I did it in just over a year. I used my contacts from that LinkedIn network to get the expertise and financial backing for The Internet Television Company. How did I do it?

First, I made the commitment. I said I was going to devote two hours a day to building my networking site. Part of that time was spent doing my profile and that sort of thing, but part of it was also just learning about networking sites, LinkedIn in particular, and how they worked. Once I understood that, I went to work.

Once I made sure that I had my profile completed, I started building. I looked for people that I already knew that might be on LinkedIn. I also sent an email to people that I knew I would like on my network and asked to them to join me on LinkedIn.

Next I started networking. I started posting questions. I also started looking at the profiles of people that I thought might have some of the skills I was looking for. I also started just talking to people with interests similar to my own.

One of the things that many people overlook about networking is the fact that you are not really just networking with the people you find directly from the site, but also with all the people that those people know. You are talking with someone on the LinkedIn site, telling them you are looking for a person or people with certain skills. The next thing you know, someone they know is contacting you and you add them to your network. Soon you network starts to grow exponentially.

The more time you spend communicating with people on the networking site, the faster your network will grow. Communicating and updating your profile on a regular basis also increases your visibility.

Whether your business needs a boost, or you are looking for some major investors, LinkedIn is a resource that you should not overlook.
