Keep Your Ego In Check

It's difficult not to get tunnel vision and focus on your point of view to the point that it becomes, in your mind, the one correct way to see the universe. When you think you know everything, and believe you are overly important, it can negatively impact your life. That's why we should all keep our egos in check.

Having high self-esteem is great, but when it gets too high, look out. In many ancient stories, tragic heroes would be defeated through the exploitation of their one fatal flaw: arrogance. They were arrogant to the point that they believed themselves infallible, incapable of being wrong. Do you know anybody who never admits to being mistaken, and never allows for the possibility that things aren't exactly they way they see them?

There are many people out there who have huge egos, and while a big ego can help in some situations, it can hurt in others. When you have faith in your own infallibility, you can fail to see a threat to your well-being until it is too late. "I'm in control, I'm fine, I'm in control…" That can go on and on until disaster strikes.

Someone who is truly wise is aware that they cannot possibly know everything there is to know. That means that no one is infallible, since there can always be a piece of information missing from their minds that proves them wrong whenever they believe themselves to be correct. To not admit to a mistake is to believe in a lie. When you think you're better than you are, it becomes easy to take on challenges you have little hope of overcoming.

Acting like you know it all can put others off and alienate you from the people who can help you get ahead in life. Many successful people know that one of the secrets to gracefully handling success is keeping an eye on your ego. When they see you ignoring that cardinal rule, they group you with all the other people who talk big, but typically can't back it up. The ones who actually can back it up usually don't talk so big, because they know better.

Modesty is better than excess ego, and will get you farther in life. Anyone who presumes to know more or be greater than is probable usually knows far less, and is far less great. The act of displaying a huge ego only serves to advertise itself as an means of compensation for personal shortcomings. It's pretty simple to avoid all these problems. Just keep your ego in check.
