Salzburg, Austria - Things to See and Do
Salzburg, Austria is a very popular destination for many people. The city has a unique baroque feel to it and a storybook atmosphere. It is a small city consisting of only 150,000 residents and is located in the Western part of Austria. It's a close knit city and on foot you are never more than 20 minutes away from anything. With more than 4000 festivals a year, it's hard to miss an event while visiting.
Aside from the beautiful scenery, Salzburg is also popular for its strong music tradition. Wolfgang Mozart was born in this city in 1756 and almost everywhere you go you will see tributes to Mozart and his music.
Shopping in Salzburg is very sophisticated which makes for great window shopping. The streets are lined with ornate hanging signs above each shop. The hanging signs all have icons or figures on them which dates back to the days when people couldn't read. Shoe stores for example have boots on the sign. In fact, in Salzburg it is a law that every merchant must have a wrought iron sign in front of his shop.
The Sound of Music Tour is a must see attraction. It's offered by Panorama Tours and is an in depth four hour tour of one of the most beloved movie musicals ever made. You will be able to see where the movie was actually shot as well as where the Von Trap family lived. A surprising fact is that most people in Austria don't even know about this movie. The reason for this is because the movie was filmed in the English language and marketed in the United States.
Spending time in cafes is an essential part of living in Salzburg, especially in the late afternoon. The cafe Sache is a highly recommended cafe you should be sure to visit. Here you can taste an authentic Salzburg Sacher Torte that dates back to 1832 as well as sample many of their other fine cakes and tortes.
Hotel Sacher is the grand hotel in Salzburg. Hotel Sacher is located alongside the Salzac River and was first opened in 1866. Combined with old world charm and outstanding decor, this hotel comes highly recommended by many.
In Salzburg, every week they have a farmers market where you can go to buy fresh vegetables, cheeses, fruits and meats. Everything is freshly grown, straight from the field. Visiting the farmer's market is a weekly tradition for the majority of locals.
If you are in the mood for a good German beer, make sure you stop in at Augustiner's Brewery. When you walk in, you will be presented with a large wall full of different sized beer mugs. Choose your mug, cool it with cold water from the many water wells and then take it to the bartender for a fill. This large beer hall has the look and feel of halls you may have seen at the Octoberfest.
Salzburg is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe which explains why over seven million people visit Salzburg year after year. It is one place you must see when in Europe!
