No matter you ride Western or English, the saddle is intended for security and comfort. However, English and Western saddles, both offer same functions but look extremely different from one another. The Western saddle was intended for cowboys who spent many days in riding the range, working and driving the cattle. Western saddle of leather are much more heavier as compared to English saddles but the weight of both rider and saddle is spread over a wider area on the back of the horse making it less wearing for the horse. The fenders, the contoured cantle and stirrups place the rider safe and comfortable in the saddle. The most noticeable feature is the horn which is used by the rider while working on cattle. Western saddles are normally built either from wooden trees enclosed in fiberglass or a rawhide or a material called as Rallied which is considered as a polyethylene. Majority of them are enclosed with leather, although nowadays lighter weight synthetic saddles are also available. Western saddles look similar; however there are specialty saddles available for trail or pleasure, reining, roping etc. English saddles provide a much closer contact with the horse's back as compared to Western saddle. They are much lighter than western saddles and the one made from synthetic material are even lighter. They are prepared from either a synthetic tree or from a laminated wooden tree. The saddles are normally covered by way of unadorned leather while in case of synthetic leather they are covered with leather lock or fabric covering. Similar to Western Saddles, English Saddles are available in different designs suiting to different activity. The larger, straighter flaps and profound seats of the Dressage saddle keep the rider in a more decent position which is appropriate in dressage and placing the legs nearer to the sides of horse to allow the rider to provide subtle support. Jumping saddles with close contact comprise a shallower seat and more advance flaps which allows the rider to take up their jumping position easily and giving them safety over fences. Few of them have also inserted design elements to make them steadier while jumping. All Purpose or General Purpose saddles are available for those riders who prefer to do both jumping and dressage. These saddles provide a deeper seat as compared to jumping saddles with close contact, although not as profound as dressage saddles. The flaps are located somewhere between those of a jumping or dressage saddle, providing security and comfort to the rider no matter they are riding on the flat surface or they are choosing to jump. These saddles are more frequently used by riders of lower levels. Thus, there are many unique facts about saddles which should be known by everyone.
