Guns in the Bronx and no answer from Politicians
By Arthur L Burton III

In a Bronx Community, complaints are flaring about the lack of respect given to the community residents. The 44th Precinct ranking number two in complaints shoots a man to death in the lobby of 1240 Walton Avenue. The witnessed that were outside saw the cops chasing an 18-year-old man into the lobby of the building. Witnesses said that the young man then stopped and said I will give you my gun, but a police officer stepped to the side while his partner shot the man to death in the lobby. The residents were furious because they say that 18-year old tried to surrender his weapon in the lobby, but the police killed him anyway. Bronx Residents stated that the shooting is a result of the aggressiveness by the NYPD at the 44th Precinct.
A shooting incident claimed a mans life on Walton Avenue and Mount Hope place a few months earlier, then another incident occurred on White Plains road in the Bronx where an officer was shot and a 19 year old was shot and killed by the Police. There are too many illegal guns in the Bronx, but there still are not enough police patrolling the street. The City Council and the Bronx Borough Presidents office before someone else is shot or killed. There must be an increase of Police patrol around Walton Avenue. The police are overworked and are understaffed but residents do not want to join the police and work with same officers who have been harassing them most of their lives. The police officer's exams are bringing in officers but the caliber and the attitude of these new cadets are just as sour as the older one's. The need for more mature adults in the police department is the answer and the age requirement for the NYPD has to change. The need for more mature individuals working for the NYPD is necessary. The way things are now, the good candidate's for the Police Department are not qualified to take the Police exam. Discipline and maturity has to be a standard for hiring for the NYPD.
The Bronx residents went out and protested in front of the 44th Precinct but nothing has changed, you can still these officers holding up traffic as they wait for the light to change and then speed through the light. This is not discipline and the only way to encourage residents that things are changing is to bring in more Community Patrol officer to intermingle with the Residents. The blue wall must also be stopped, there is no them and us. The Police need to be members of us and not a separate entity and covering your partner after he has done something illegal is just as bad as them being the perpetrator themselves. There is no pride in allowing a wrong to be committed when you have sworn to protect and uphold the law.
In fairness, it is legal for the police to shoot an armed individual if the individual is threatening someone with a gun or the Police are in fear of their lives and that everyone can agree with. No should be expected to stand there and be shot in order to disarm someone who is about to shoot them.
The Mayor of New York has made some statements and enraged the community even further but where is the Bronx borough Presidents statement in all this? The Politicians still seem to be waiting for this to blow over and that means hundreds of more deaths may be committed. The Bronx Community has to hit the streets and as well as protest consistently they will need to force their local Politicians to take action.
