Dell Axim X5 Review

Some time last year, I got interested in Pocket PC's. I was attending Western Technology Center, A Vocational School in Burns Flat, Western Oklahoma. Since I was enrolled, I got a check from the government every couple of months, as well as my paycheck from where I was working. Once I had some money saved up, I went online and bought the Axim X5. This PDA "Personal Digital Assistant" is made by Dell, and comes pre-installed with Microsoft Pocket PC 3.0.1 Build 11178.

The Reseller I bought the device from "TigerDirect" had the product at my house within a very reasonable time table, about 2-3 days before it was scheduled to be dropped off. I was very pleased when I checked the package and nothing was missing. With new smelling plastic in hand, I dove into the package, the unit itself is very light, only 196 grams, so holding it feels natural. A back-lit 3.5" TFT screen running at a resolution of: 320x240 pixels can be manipulated for brightness using pre-installed software. Just go through two menus and you will be clicking your way to a brighter, or dimmer display, whatever you choose.

With a Processor clocked at 400 MHz, the Axim X5 can definitely handle just about anything you can throw at it. When you are just listening to music, and you need the batteries to last a bit longer than usual, just navigate to the Power Settings, and change the setting to: Auto. Now when something happens over the wireless card, or a scheduled alert gets triggered, and Cycles get used up for other things, the system will increase the Processor Performance according to how much power you need to draw to keep your music from skipping and getting delayed. However, while near a power source, switch to Maximum Performance, now all system processes will be handled with the top priority, no matter how much power it drains. With this little computer, it's all in your hands.

Hand-held devices use up memory, just as Desktop Computers do. So the logical answer is to place a decent amount of both System Memory, and Storage Memory inside your product to handle everyday needs, as well as those special ones that don't happen but once a week. With 64 MB of System Memory, you can run all the programs you want, and still have enough left over to be streaming music over the Internet. 48 MB of ROM or Read Only Memory allows you to store your Operating System as well as certain Documents, Settings, and such.

In conclusion, this product is a very good buy, I bought it for $210 last year, and I still get use out of it. Now that the newer models of the Axim Family are out, this product should go drastically down in price, but it's feasibility will never decrease, as long as it can do what you need. In that aspect, I have had nothing to complain about, I need a new Stylus, but that is a year later, and some abuse withstanding.
