You've found her - The One. You've made a decision - summoned your courage and embraced commitment. You've picked out a ring. You've asked her father's permission. Your best mate has already started penning ideas for his speech. You're good to go.
Or are you?
Have you thought about where you're going to propose? It has to be somewhere memorable; your front room or the restaurant round the corner is simply not going to cut the mustard. But you're both busy people - how will you find the time to go somewhere special, and how will you avoid arousing her suspicion?
The answer is simple - and on your doorstep. France is arguably one of the most romantic places in the world, and with its proximity to England, it's close enough to make journeying there not so much of an ordeal. This means that the object of your affections won't completely suss out your intentions if you casually suggest a weekend break.
So with France in mind, where are the best cities to visit with romantic intentions?
Well, let's start with the obvious choice. True, it's exactly that - obvious - but it has become so for a reason. Paris oozes romance. Filled with famously unforgettable buildings; the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Hotel de Ville and of course the Eiffel Tower, Paris offers nothing but wonderful opportunities to propose that you'll be able to tell the grandkids about.
But if Paris is a bit too obvious a destination, you might like to try somewhere like St Tropez, or Nice. Both are situated in the South of France and boast gorgeous beaches and beautiful weather. What could be better than proposing after a stroll along a moonlit beach? And if you don't fancy being a beach bum during the day, you can check out the sights at the Old Town in Nice or visit The Musée de l'Annonciade in St Tropez.
But if sun and sand isn't your thing, perhaps you'd prefer the other extreme - snow. Imagine proposing at the top of a mountain - then, if she says no, at least you've got a quick getaway to save embarrassment. Chamonix and Grenoble are both popular winter sports resorts, and both offer amazing views of the Alps. Surely nothing can beat a hard day of skiing followed by a relaxing evening in front of a roaring log fire. If the idea of too much physical exertion is unappealing but you like the aesthetic aspect, then consider Annecy or Tours. Annecy offers mountains and lakes, whilst Tours - known as "Le Jardin de la France" prides itself on its parks.
So there you have it - sun, snow, mountains, lakes and parks. What more could you want? If it's food, then try Dijon, which holds the annual International and Gastronomic Fair each October. If you'd like something completely different, visit Chartres at festival time. If you're a history buff, check out Carcassonne. Wherever you pick will ensure that neither of you ever forgets France!
