As demands for cameras in phone increased, manufacturers started to include them in almost all high end phones. Initially, the integrated cameras were of VGA resolution which was good at shooting low resolution pictures meant for multimedia messages. However as mobile technologies evolved, these low resolution cameras made way for multi-megapixel cameras.
In the current scenario, a 2.0 megapixel camera in any camera phone is the norm in contrast to 0.3 megapixel cameras of yesteryears. All leading manufacturers now have camera phones with resolution of 5.0 megapixel which is all set to go further up. Rumors about a colossal 10 megapixel camera are making rounds recently. With high resolution, almost every camera phone today features advanced imaging tools like zoom, flash, autofocus, special effects and in many cases a fully evolved picture/video editor. Other than functionality, camera phones has also undergone a drastic in its outlook. Gone are the days when a camera phone is as big and heavy as a brick. They now feather weight, comes in razor slim casing with highly stylized outlook.
Camera phones today are not only competing against each other but also with digital camera. Camera phones enjoys many advantages over digital camera for their size, ease of use and their multi-functional qualities. Price is another factor working in favor of camera phones. In fact, many experts predicts that camera phones will completely wipe out digital camera in the future.
The rate at which technologies are advancing, the future is much nearer than it seems.
