· Limit your alcohol consumption. You should consume no more than one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine or one swallow (1.5 ounces) of 80-proof whiskey if you're a woman. Men can double these amounts. More than these will increase your blood pressure. You can lower blood pressure naturally by 5-10 mmHg by just restricting alcohol intake.
· The importance of exercise. If you have your doctor's OK then slowly begin an aerobic exercise program. Start slowly and gradually increase the time and intensity with a goal of reaching a 30-minute workout most days of the week. Younger people should jog for 30 minutes a week and elderly folks should walk 30 minutes at least 3 times a week.
· Decrease stress. Stress does have a direct impact on your blood pressure and if you want to keep your blood pressure within normal limits you will need to eliminate or at least reduce your stress. In some instances stress is self-induced and in others it seems unavoidable. In some people stress can cause overeating and contribute to the overweight condition. If you have trouble managing your stress level you may want to seek professional help. Start with your doctor first.
· Coffee and caffeine. The caffeine in these beverages can cause a temporary rise in blood pressure so you should not have a problem unless you have caffeine sensitivity. If you have heart disease your doctor may want you to reduce of eliminate the consumption of caffeine.
· Adequate potassium intake. Unlike sodium, potassium has the affect of lowering blood pressure naturally. The government guidelines recommend a daily consumption of 4700 milligrams.
