Picking out a snowboard can be difficult because there are so many brands and types to choose from. Alpine, freeride, and freestyle are the three basic types of boards. When the day comes to pick out a snowboard, you want to be sure you pick one that meets your style of riding. You would choose a freestyle board if the half-pipe is where you spend most of your time. If your style is downhill runs then choose a freestyle board and if high-speed racing is your thing, then choose an alpine board.

Another important aspect of picking out a board is making sure that you get boots and bindings that go with the board. The set up you chose will have its own features that are made for the type of snowboarding you do.

For beginners just starting out you will want to choose a freestyle or freeride snowboard with soft boots and freestyle bindings. This set up is going to give you some forgiveness when learning. If you are just starting out as a beginner, a shorter board will make steering and maneuvering a lot easier. The height of the board should be somewhere between your shoulders and your nose. But, keep in mind that the height is not the only thing you will need to think about.

The flexibility of the board is another thing you need to keep in mind. If you are considered a lighter rider then choose a snowboard that offers a bit more flexibility, and if you are on the heavier side a stiffer board would be better suited for you.

Another thing to consider is how wide the board is. If you have smaller feet this will not be as much of an issue for you. If you are one of those that have large feet you do not want your boots hanging over the edge of the board. The reason being, your toes could catch in the snow and cause you to take a fall. You will need a wider board if you have bigger feet.

If you are a beginner, you might want to rent your equipment first because as you will find out, snowboarding is not cheap. If you buy your gear before you decide if you actually enjoy snowboarding, you could waste a lot of money. Take a trip to your local store and talk to a salesman to see if they rent equipment. That way, you can test different set ups to see which one is best for you.

When it comes time to buy your own gear, and you are certain that snowboarding is right for you, the end of the season is the perfect time to do your shopping. The end of the snowboarding season is when you will find some great deals as stores make room for whatever new gear they have for the season too come.
